Find the right class by age

Every class follows the Gracie Barra curriculum for its age group, so a five-year-old and a 35-year-old each learn at the right pace.

  • Two young girls in pink gis and gray belts stand in line at the start of class, parents seated behind them
    Ages 3–4

    Tiny Champions

Movement games, listening and first holds.

Class is mostly games with a purpose: rolling, crawling, balancing and following a coach’s instructions in a group. The goal at this age is body awareness and the habit of listening, not technique for its own sake.

    Class times: Mon–Thu, 3:20 PM.

  • A boy with a yellow belt does a bear-crawl warm-up with his class
    Ages 5–6

    Little Champions I

Balance, focus and the basic positions.

Children learn the core positions of jiu-jitsu, how to fall safely, and how to stay calm when someone is holding them down. Drills are short and structured so five- and six-year-olds stay engaged.

Class times: Mon–Thu, 4:00 PM. Tue and Thu, 5:00 PM.

Free intro classes for ages 5–6 are Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM.

  • Two kids practice a guard position on the blue mats during a kids class
    Ages 7–9

    Little Champions II

Real technique, controlled sparring and anti-bullying skills.

The curriculum adds escapes, controls and submissions taught at a kid-safe pace, with supervised live rounds. Anti-bullying lessons cover recognizing a bad situation, using words first and staying safe if it turns physical.

    Class times: Mon–Thu, 4:00 and 5:00 PM.

  • A boy in a blue Gracie Barra gi and mouthguard high-fives his coach
    Ages 10–14

    Juniors and Teens

The full youth curriculum, with optional competition.

Older kids train a curriculum close to the adult program: positional strategy, chained techniques and regular live training. Competing is optional; students who want it can be invited to the kids competition team.

Class times: Mon–Fri, 6:00 PM. Sat, 10:00 AM.

  • A black belt instructor sits on the mat explaining a technique to a circle of adult students
    Older teens and adults

    Adults

GB1 Fundamentals for beginners, then advanced and competition classes. A women’s class on Fridays.

Every adult starts in GB1 Fundamentals, Gracie Barra’s beginner course, which pairs self-defense techniques with the core positions of jiu-jitsu. You move into advanced and competition training when your coaches say you’re ready, and can add No-Gi after a few Fundamentals classes.

Class times: Early morning, late morning and evening, Mon–Sat.

What training here is like

The things families and new adults ask about most, answered with how the academy actually runs.

One curriculum, start to finish

Gracie Barra teaches a set program: GB1 Fundamentals, GB2 Advanced and GB3 for adults, and Gracie Barra Kids classes by age. Each class builds on the last, whichever coach is teaching that day.

Parents can train while kids do

On Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 6:00 PM, and Saturday at 10:00 AM, Juniors and Teens (ages 10–14) and an adult GB1 Fundamentals class run at the same time on separate mats.

Classes around a work schedule

Adult beginner classes run early morning, late morning and evening, Monday through Saturday, so a missed class is easy to make up.

Arizona ESA accepted

Kids programs can be paid with Empowerment Scholarship Account funds through ClassWallet.

What happens at your first class

Most people walk in a little nervous. The first class is built for that: a beginner class, a gi we provide, and a coach who knows it’s your first day.

  1. Pick a class time. Book online or call (480) 512-9177. You’ll only see classes made for beginners in your age group.
  2. Arrive 15 minutes early. Check in at the front desk. We’ll set you up with a gi and show you around.
  3. Train one technique at a time. A warm-up, a demonstrated technique, then practice with a partner. You can sit out any drill.
  4. Decide later. If you want to keep training, memberships are month to month with 30 days’ notice to cancel.

The coaches teach one program

Head Professor Lucas Rubbo leads a staff of professors and coaches who all teach the same Gracie Barra program, so your child’s Tuesday class builds on Monday’s no matter who is on the mat.
